Here are some answers to common Reverse Vending questions we get asked.

Q. How many Reverse Vending Machines (RVM) are there in the World?

A. There are over 80,000 Reverse Vending Machines installed Worldwide

Q. How many of your machines are installed?

A. There are over 12,000 of our Reverse Vending Machines installed in Continental Europe.

Q. Are the RVM noisy?

A. No, the noise level is minimal, even when ‘crushing’ cans.

Q. Is installation difficult?

A. No. All that is required is a standard 13 amp electric plug & socket and a standard telephone/ ISDN connection to automatically transmit recycling data.

Q. How many used beverage containers does an RVM accept?

A. This depends upon the RVM model. The ‘stand alone’ reVend 300 & ReVend 360 will generally hold 1000 cans and/or PET bottles before needing to be .....emptied .

Q. Does the RVM require regular maintenance.

A. No. The RVM requires very little maintenance. This is tried & tested technology, however, we recommend that clients enter into a maintenance agreement with Avery (see Partners) who install the RVM; provide a 24/7 maintenance service and monitor & collate the RVM recycling statistics.

Using a Reverse Vending Machine

The recycler simply places the empty bottle or can in the receiving aperture. The recycler is also guided through this process by the on screen help monitor and instructions illustrated on the machine.

The horizontal in-feed system allows the user to insert containers quickly and easily.

The bottle or can is automatically rotated; scanned by a UPC Scanner, which reads the beverage container's UPC code (bar code). Once a container is scanned and identified (matched to database) , it is processed and typically crushed to reduce its size so as to increase storage capacity. A special material recognition system can be used in addition to the bar code scanner when needed.

Any unacceptable objects or unsuitable materials are automatically rejected.

The recycler receives an incentive rewards voucher which is automatically dispensed by the RVM. The voucher may be redeemed as part of an incentive scheme for example, in store at a supermarket or purchase discount on a related product.

Schools and Colleges have used the recycling incentive vouchers scheme to encourage timely homework, good behaviour and class attendance by students (see Education sector)

A large number of bottles or cans maybe received by the RVM, which automatically records the “value” of the used beverage containers recycled prior to issuing the incentive voucher .

The data acquisition capabilities of the in-built computer software facilitate data analysis by bottle and/or can type, quantity & brand to be accessed from an authorised computer user anywhere in the UK via an internal ISDN modem.

The data can be analysed & highlighted according to quantities received, by type of material and/or brand each hour, day, month as required.

The RVM’s are accessible remotely allowing updates, voucher details, bar code data bases etc to be updated via the internet by any authorised user .

The RVM will also inform the maintenance company of any faults or if it requires attention via the internal ISDN modem. It will also inform the operative if the large receptor container require emptying
